THRIVES: Strategies Black Professionals Use to Do More Than Survive
Black professionals use sophisticated strategies to navigate toxic behaviors in every industry. Some use strategies to survive, but many have found strategies to thrive.
What else can you do when you're Black At Work?
“At every step of my journey, it seemed there was a point where I was told, ‘You can go this far, but no farther.’ It wasn’t always about my skills or knowledge—it was something else. I realized it was about how I looked to them.”
The workplace presents challenges for all professionals, but when you’re working while Black, toxic workplace behaviors seem to find you more often than your colleagues, while mentors and sponsors seem to pass you by. Black professionals deserve the same kind of career guidance their peers receive—and we also need additional strategies to navigate the unique barriers workplaces present to us.
Through Black At Work interviews with dozens of professionals, we’ve uncovered a pattern of strategies used by Black professionals to move past survival—strategies that ensure each of us THRIVES.

Black professionals use THRIVES strategies to blast through the barriers that toxic colleagues and workplace cultures throw their way. Not today, racism!
“I realized I needed to stop watering myself down. I started to tell my stories, highlight my wins, and push back against the nonsense—and that’s when things began to change for me.”
Most professionals use strategies to find success in their roles and climb their chosen career ladders. But when you’re working while Black, the “standard playbook” doesn’t always work. You need strategies designed by others who’ve been in your shoes.
